— More than $400,000 in scholarships has been awarded to 361 graduates from Bellport, Longwood, and Patchogue-Medford high schools since 2007 —
YAPHANK, NY — June 25, 2021 — Caithness Long Island, LLC, as part of its ongoing commitment to supporting local students who plan on studying science, engineering, or the environment at the college or university level, recently awarded $25,000 in scholarships to 26 seniors graduating from Bellport, Longwood, and Patchogue-Medford high schools. According to Ross D. Ain, President, Caithness Long Island, LLC, the company has provided more than $400,000 in educational assistance to 361 high school graduates through the Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship program since its inception in 2007. The three high schools are in proximity to the Caithness Long Island Energy Center, a 350-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power-generating station in Yaphank.
“We at Caithness are once again pleased to provide financial support to local high school students, especially since they continue to face unparalleled challenges created by the ongoing pandemic,” said Mr. Ain. “As the graduates of the Class of 2021 embark on their post-high school educational pursuits, everyone at Caithness wishes them continued success.”
Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievements, with winners selected by the schools’ faculty and administrations.
The 2021 Caithness Long Island Energy Center Scholarship recipients from Bellport High School’s Class of 2021 are Mariz Baslious, Aidan Gaynor, Joseph T. Gentzel, Angie Gomez, Brenden Muldoon, Rian Murphy, Kanya Shah, and Maria Slavnova.
Longwood High School seniors receiving scholarships are Justin Yankow, Joshua Archibald, Emily Bulger, Rachel Mandaro, Gavin Stumpf, Amber Walkowiak, Alyssa Amato, and Imani Studdard.
Graduating seniors receiving this year’s scholarships from Patchogue-Medford High School are Savina Chan, Leanna Franco, Joseph Gabel, Samantha Lankenau, Yetunde Olateru-Olagbegi, Ethan Phan, Christopher Rodas, Vincent Schwartz, and Jostine Zambrana Rodriguez.
Caithness’s commitment to education extends beyond the annual scholarship program. It offers internships, job-shadowing programs, and plant tours that teach local students about power-generation technology and its relationship to the environment, which allows them to consider careers in the energy and related fields. Caithness also supports several environmental organizations, nonprofit groups, and community-based activities throughout the Town of Brookhaven and across Long Island.
Since commencing commercial operations in August 2009, the Caithness Long Island Energy Center remains the region’s cleanest, most energy-efficient, and water-conserving power-generating plant, helping to decrease the region’s carbon footprint. Utilizing highly efficient combined-cycle generating technology and operating primarily on natural gas, the plant produces energy more efficiently than any other facility of its kind on Long Island. In addition, it operates cleaner than the older, inefficient power-generating units currently operating in Nassau and Suffolk counties while generating more than 26 percent of Long Island’s power. As a result, Caithness plays a critical part in helping to achieve New York State’s goal of a 40-percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2030.
